House GOP Oversight accuses DHS of ‘refusing’ to confirm briefing on Trump assassination attempt

The House Oversight Committee is accusing the Department of Homeland Security of “unprofessionalism” after a briefing between committee members and Secret Service officials has not yet been scheduled despite an agreement to meet on Tuesday.

“The Department of Homeland Security took over communications with the Committee and has since refused to confirm a briefing time,” a committee spokesperson said in a statement. “The Oversight Committee has a long record of bipartisan oversight of the Secret Service and the unprofessionalism we are witnessing from current DHS leadership is unacceptable.”

The House Oversight Committee requested the briefing earlier this week after an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday.

Now, Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) “will issue a subpoena” to ensure Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle will appear for a hearing on Monday. Cheatle has already agreed to appear for the hearing, but the subpoena comes as a way to “head off any attempt by DHS to backtrack on her appearance,” according to a spokesperson.

Meanwhile, a briefing between Secret Service members and the House Homeland Security Committee is expected to take place as soon as Tuesday, another source familiar with the plans told the Washington Examiner.

Anna Giaritelli contributed to this report.
